Thom's Powers

Thom is a Superhero in a world where this is totally the norm, the League of Heroes is recognised internationally and Thom is one of its probationary members.

Thom's power? Healing. Not only does Thom never get sick but he also can heal himself and perhaps more importantly, heal others. To do this, Thom is equipped with a second sight that enables him to see injuries and pain in people both physically and psychologically. Pain and illness of the physical variety is seen as a 'stain' on the character's aura and, if focused upon for enough time Thom can tell the exact reason for the pain. Psychological pain, similarly, is scene as a black smoke in your character's aura and if Thom focuses upon it, he can glean a sense of what it comes from for example heartbreak.

It would be great then if you could fill in this handy table below so that I can know what Thom might see from your character!

Thom's Permissions

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Definitely okay especially when you factor in the nature of the game. For a 'friendly'/'platonic' level of intimacy I'm open to it with all my CR once Thom and your character develop a degree of closeness. When it becomes Romantic Thom is canonically gay and I'd like most of that CR to be discussed prior to the physical affection.

PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Be my guest! Remember though, Thom is a Superhero and will take the negative connotations of physical violence personally and be more than willing to fight back. Also he's petty as hell. Oh and he can heal.

RELATIONSHIPS: Thom will move quite quickly into friendships, being eager to build that kind of thing between himself and any other characters in the game. Thom is known to fantasise quite early on in knowing someone and this will be indicated in his meta. He's a hopeless romantic and can fall fast in terms of his mentality with regards to another person.

MENTAL INFORMATION: Thom has no mental training or immunity to telepathy

MEDICAL INFORMATION: Thom is immune to sickness and has a healing factor that responds in the way of heat/light. He can heal all injuries to himself (canon examples include healing his own fractured neck, ruptured internal organs, torn arteries and severed tendons) and transmute that energy into his powers. He does however suffer from seizures as a result of his powers.

character information
name: Thom Creed
canon: Hero (Novel by Perry Moore)
canon point: Just following the press conference where Thom publicly comes out and is kicked out of the League of Heroes
age: 17
(canon) background:
Wikipedia Article - while this covers the basic background of Thom's world I thought it pertinent to also include some 'key events' that are character shaping for Thom for the sake of having a more comprehensive idea of the character.
• Discovers his mother was also a superhero with the power of invisibility
• Accepted into the League of Heroes as a probationary member
• Hides the details of his new superhero job from his dad
• Commences training as a superhero / learns to use his powers
• Heals a pediatric burn ward full of patients and his power EMPs an entire block as a result
• Continues to run into 'Dark Hero', a vigilante who seems to be stalking Thom
• Father finds out that he's a superhero, shames him publicly in front of the entire League, father moves to assault Thom in front of witnesses (uncharacteristic for his father)
• Meets his mother for the first time since she abandoned him, she's unable to turn visible anymore
• Has his 'first kiss' with a Supervillain (unknown to Thom at the time) called Ssnake
• Ssnake arrested for the serial killing of superheroes, publicly unveiled as the murder in a press conference
• Thom forced to come out publicly at aforementioned press conference, providing Ssnake with an alibi to prove that he wasn't actually responsible for their deaths
• Thom kicked out of the League of heroes
• Thom's life in ruin, instantly recogniseable as a failed superhero and homosexual
• Has house vandalised
• Runs away from home after his father refuses to speak/look at him
• This marks the canon point I'll be taking Thom from, if you'd like further elaboration on his storyline and the finale of the novel please let me know!

abilities:
• Hand to hand combat - Thom is trained in some degree of hand to hand combat thanks to his training within the League of Heroes. He is easily able to incapacitate two civilians twice his size during the novel
•Healing - Thom can heal others through touch. Notable things he's healed in canon include: cancer, complete obliteration (i.e. separated into molecules), severed limbs, broken bones, burns, a dead plant.
• Invulnerability - Thom has a degree of invulnerability because of his healing powers as its an unconscious ability, he also can't get sick. Notable injuries of his own that are healed in the novel: severed Achilles tendon, ruptured femoral artery, fractured neck, fractured spine, punctured eyeballs.
• Energy transmutation - Thom acts as a battery when he heals and this energy can be used to gain other superhuman abilities listed below (At his canon point for entry in Riverview Thom is unaware of this so a significant event would need to happen in game where he'd be required to heal a lot of people / repeatedly heal himself before they're 'unlocked'):

· Flight
· Super senses
· Super speed
· Super Strength

strengths:
Determined - Thom is very determined with regards to being a Superhero. What started as merely fantasy evolves into something truly aspirational when he gets a grip on his powers and he pushes himself to be the best superhero he can be. He trains tirelessly in order to get what he wants and advances in leaps and bounds in a rather short period of time.
Hard Working and Selfless - Thom not only 'works' as a local superhero for his community but he also works at a local canteen as a bus boy and beyond that works at the local community centre as part of an English teaching program for immigrant kids to help improve their literacy outside of school, even if it means he gives them dramatic readings of the Lorax from time to time. He's also very willing to sacrifice; his own powers give him seizures when he over-exerts himself yet he heals an entire hospital ward of children and later in the novel pays for a friend's chemotherapy.
Brave/Ethical - Thom is inherently brave. Not in the traditional gung-ho ride into battle nature of the word, as it is shown in the novel that during his first few fights he's genuinely terrified and also that he can get quite anxious about some of the aspects of his heroism however he's incredibly brave in regards to willing to stand up for what is right. In the novel he is 'forced' to come out as gay despite living in a heavily homophobic society in order to save someone's life. Thom could've ignored this situation and let the person die but knew it was an important turning point with regards to his heroism and he was doing the right thing. (293 words)

weaknesses:
Judgemental - Despite his selflessness and generosity it has been proven many times that Thom is very quick to judge. He judges his father's behaviours without ever trying to discover the source of his problems. He judges fellow members of his squad at the League of Heroes and some of them before he gets to know them- for example he judges Scarlet for always wearing the same clothing (in this case an oversized jacket) only to find out later she has a colostomy bag and wears the jacket to avoid attention.
Daydreamer / Prone to Fantasy - Thom is known to entertain ridiculous fantasies in his own head to the extent he can end up completely getting lost in his own world. For example he ends up fantasising about what a superhero might look like naked / the size of his nipples while in the middle of a conversation, completely ignoring what had been said.
Petty as all hell - Thom is ridiculously petty especially when it comes to conflict resolution. He can be quite whiny when it comes to things especially when he's in the wrong or thinks he's been treated unfairly. A prime example of this is when Thom gets pissed off at his father for trying to force him to quit the league of heroes his response is to take his father's old hero/military costume and throw several jars of pasta sauce over it. (words: 240)

job skills (optional):
• Busboying (Thom works as a busboy at a local cafeteria)
• Super-heroing (self-explanatory but maybe not relevant within the city)
• Teaching (Thom works with immigrant children teaching them literacy)
• Fitness/Training (Thom has an extensive daily workout at the local community centre which includes basketball)

housing (optional): No preferences!

BACKGROUND
Thom Creed is your average ordinary gay teen superhero. He's from an alternate version of modern day New York where Superheroes are about as common as the next guy. Thom is one such particular hero. Born to Hal Creed the most hated Superhero on the planet (thanks to his inability to save Wilson Tower and the first and only non-powered superhero ever added to the ranks of the League of Heroes) and Lila Creed or Invisible Lass, a League hero who went completely AWOL on a reconnaissance mission when Thom was a child- abandoning not only her job as a Superhero but also her Husband and Son in order to live out an affair.
Thanks to his own shame and the loss of his wife Hal Creed grew to hate Superheroes, viewing them as the most degenerate members of modern society, a fact that he made rather vocal. Thom, his son, is both a Superhero and a homosexual. Two things he spent most of his life trying to hide, until there came a day where his gifts came into light and were noticed by the League of Heroes and Thom, enamoured by those superheroes, goes to tryouts in order to become a League Probationary Member, rebelling against his father's wishes in order to try and improve his own life and become who he is meant to be, rather than what his father wants him to...
Exit Strategy - Thom's canon involves an alien monster called a 'World Eater' dormant within Wilson tower who's heart can actually be used as a battery - if exploded it could be used to travel to another part of the universe. For the purposes of Xistentia I've decided the World Eater's heart has been used as a corridor in order for D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. agents to be able to invade their world as an armada and as Thom is the only one with access to the World Eater's heart (you need to simultaneously be able to withstand extreme heat and repeated stabbing / slicing as the cavern around the World Eater's heart is sharp as glass and needs to be burned away), he's gone in to detonate it internally in order to try create a polarity effect and pull the D.E.S.T.I.N.Y. agents back through, sacrificing himself to the polarity effect in the process.

IN UNIVERSE
MORALITY:
Thom has a Superhero's code of ethics, in his perception as such he is a force of 'good', he holds judgement over other people and would probably go as far as killing for 'the greater good' or even for having a good enough reason to do so. He would turn to violence and has done so in the past. Canonically speaking Thom has beaten two men nearly to the point of death for graverobbing (in this instance, trying to rob the grave of one of Thom's only friends) and attempted to stab one through the heart with a set of garden shears but was stopped by a vigilante.

WAR ATTITUDES:
Thom would find a happy balance between the 'living his life' and 'fighting a war' aspects of Xistentia. He is, after all, a superhero in his own world and wouldn't give up that kind of role easily. He is by nature a fighter and canonically speaking is part of the squad that takes down the big villain of the novel. The stark difference in societies from Thom's homeworld and Xistentia will mean that he will have more of a desire to build a life than before as he will no longer be public enemy number one. Despite the fact that he's been generally mistreated by his own people Thom will be more than willing to fight for the 'greater good' and in order to save his home world. He is also the son of two superheroes, though his dad is the most hated superhero on his home planet for his failure to save the wilson tower when the World Eater first struck, leading to the death of hundreds of civilians. Thom has been fighting most of his life to prove himself and this would be reflected in his attitudes towards the war.

INTIMATE RELATIONSHIPS:
Thom is by and large a dreamer, especially within a romantic capacity. Although its important to note that in his canon point he hasn't had any significant relationships romantically speaking or really even platonically, he fantasises a lot about having a husband and happy relationship as an adult despite the complications caused by his homosexuality. Also as the son of the most hated superhero in his home world he found it incredibly difficult to form friendships or significant relationships even among his peers. Although he's on the basketball team he at no stage references any actual friends and the only other relationships he forms within the novel are by coincidence (for example, his squad mates with the League of Heroes). Later though canonically Thom finds a boyfriend which proves that while he hasn't had much of a chance to work on these things, he is more than capable. Thom will not have been followed into the game with the terrible reputation that he has both from his father and the fact that he lives in a heavily homophobic society (which thanks to recent events is heavily focused on Thom with regards to its judgement) and as such it would be a 'fresh start' for him and he would take full advantage of that.

COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS:
Thom's community contributions would take many forms. For example, as a healer he could have a huge contribution with regards to healing living matter effected by the war be it people or even plants (as he's canonically shown to revive a flower from death). He would also like to continue working as superhero through any 'heroic' deeds that arrived during his time in the city. On a less 'super' level however Thom is also canonically a teacher at his local community centre where he helps immigrant kids with their literacy and numeracy, this could be another level which he could help as something separate from his superhero persona.

PLAYER INFORMATION
NAME: Matthew
ARE YOU OVER THE AGE OF 18? Yep!
CHARACTERS PLAYED: N/A

CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Thom Creed
PREFERRED JOURNAL: [personal profile] sanator
CANON: Hero - Perry Moore (Novel).
CANON POINT: After a press conference in which Thom is forced to come out publicly as homosexual despite a homophobic society, thus publicly shaming himself and his father, in order to save the life of a supervillain wrongly accused of murder.
AGE: (17 canonically) Would like to age him up to 18 (see below!)

BACKGROUND: Wikipedia

WISH: Thom wishes that his society would be more tolerant of homosexuality! It would be a particularly fervent wish as Thom was forced to publicly come out as homosexual and the repurcussions were massive: he was removed from the league of heroes, his father grew to hate him (if only in Thom's own perceptions), he was the target of discrimination and became instantly recognisable to everyone in his city.

FIT: Thom is a superhero with a strict code of ethics and the desire to do good in the world, to the extent he works as a volunteer for the local community centre helping immigrant kids with their literacy and later tutoring higher levels of education to help disadvantaged kids, but more importantly Thom is a healer; he has the ability to see psychological and physical pain and more importantly the ability to heal it. He's also a romantic dreamer with a tendency towards fantasising about perfect a perfect romantic life with members of the league of heroes. With that in mind I think Thom would fit both sides of the game's concept. His contribution would take similar forms: helping those in need, committing 'hero' deeds, healing those who might request it (even though its to his own detriment at times), generating the 'positive energy' through acts of intimacy both platonic and sexually). [Canon examples of Thom's desire to help people would, for example, include spending his own college savings on a member of his squad's chemotherapy / healing a hospital burns unit full of children / tutoring literacy in children]

CONSENT: Thom is very much interested in the idea of consent and freedom of self. One of the main examples of this is that Thom himself was devastated when his canon villain enslaved the minds of every superhero in the League of Heroes in order to attempt to explode the planet to return to his own home planet- Thom was responsible for breaking the villain's mind control and was ready to sacrifice himself in order to do so. Thom wouldn't break someone else's consent either, as is seen multiple times throughout the book- he attempts to heal Ruth's psychological pain and immediately stops when asked, he keeps Scarlet's secret about her sickness despite being threatened by his squad leader.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Thom is a superhero, which in his canon is similar to a mutant and passed on through birth in Thom's case as his mother had the power of invisibility. In Thom's case his healing is seen in multiple ways
- Seeing Sickness/Pain - Thom seems physical and psychological pain as a stain on a character's aura. If he focuses intently enough he can pinpoint what their issue is, especially when it comes to the physical. Pychologically, if Thom focuses hard enough he can get a 'sense' of the memory/idea the pain is causing for example if its heartbreak as seen in the novel.
- Invincibility - Thom cannot get sick himself, nor can he be injured as his healing ability can be directed upon himself. Its seen as a 'fire' or 'light' that starts to heat up the moment he suffers an injury. He severs the tendons in his own legs in the novel, ruptures his femoral artery, walks through a cavern made of spiked glass, breaks his neck, ruptures internal organs. He's still learning how these powers work in the novel however and doesn't achieve full 'invincibility' until the end of the novel.
- Healing - Thom is able to heal a great deal of injuries but not all of them. Things he's healed in the novel: broken bones, severed limbs, varying degrees of burns, common illnesses, bruising, minor injury, complete obliteration (he was able to knit someone's molecules back together), a dead plant, cancer. He wasn't however able to heal someone who'd been completely impaled on a tree branch because he was still learning his powers.
- Energy Transmutation - Thom is able to transmute the energy he gets from healing himself and others in order to give himself super strength, speed, super senses, flight. This power will probably not be used while in Cuddle City unless an event occurs where Thom is required to heal on a massive level as I am not taking him from the end of the novel.

SAMPLES: Prose Sample with Clary | Texting thread with Snart
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES / FURTHER EXPLANATIONS
AGE: - this could conceivably done by taking him from a canon point after the events of the novel but I'd prefer not to do this as Thom changes drastically in terms of power towards the end of the novel, becoming what is referred to in the book as an A-Tier hero. I think the ambiguity of his age in the novel would make it easy enough to view him as 18- he's a high school senior that is offended by the idea of playing Basketball with the Junior's squad after being kicked off the team. Although Thom's emotional maturity in the beginning of the book is questionable (he's a closeted gay man in a broken home, his father the world's most hated superhero and his mother completely absent) he develops rapidly during the book and especially once he becomes a probationary member of The League of Heroes thanks to the influences of the people around him. I don't think it would be a huge leap either, ageing him by a matter of months as he refers to himself in the book as getting 'closer to eighteen' - His ideas on consent and his sexuality are both mature enough to be considered adult, not only is Thom a superhero that follows a strict code of ethics, in a moment of desperation he's also able to pose with enough maturity to convince a stranger at a gay bar that he was in college before admitting that he was underage.

ANYTHING ELSE? Nope!
